The Houston Astros provided an update on starting pitcher José Urquidy, who is still working his way back from an injury suffered in April.
Houston Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy is not ready to rejoin the team and will continue his rehab from injury Tuesday in Corpus Christi. Urquidy told The Athletic he will make his next rehab start with the Astros’ Double-A affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks, when the team plays San Antonio in the Alamo City.
Urquidy has made two rehab starts with the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys since being cleared to return to the mound to pitch after the All-Star Break. Sugar Land is preparing for a trip to Las Vegas, which likely explains the change in Urquidy’s rehab.
His last start was last Wednesday, the same night outfielder Yordan Alvarez made his first rehab start due to injury. Urquidy pitched three innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs and a walk, while striking out two batters.
Urquidy’s first rehab start was July 14, his first action since April 30, when he left a game against Philadelphia with what turned out to be right shoulder inflammation. He has been on the 15-day injured list since May 1.
In that first rehab start, Urquidy pitched just two innings. He only gave up one hit, but allowed two unintentional runs.
The Astros are facing the AL West-leading Texas Rangers Monday through Wednesday, with the home series representing Houston’s first games at Minute Maid Park since after the All-Star Break.
