Comparing the five richest contracts ever signed in the NBA after Jaylen Brown’s record-breaking deal

Jaylen Brown became the highest-paid NBA player in league history after his $304 million contract extension with the Celtics. But who did he surpass?

The NBA has been growing over the years. Due to its growing popularity, huge TV deals and insane merchandise and ticket sales, its players are also getting paid well these days.
One example is Jaylen Brown, a player for the Boston Celtics, who has just signed a contract worth 304 million dollars over five years. The contract will pay Brown nearly $70 million in 2028-29 alone.

The NBA has changed a lot, no doubt, and current players have benefited greatly from the league’s continued growth.
That said, and in light of Brown’s contract extension, we take a look at the five biggest contracts in NBA history. Obviously, they are all modern contracts.

5. Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker – $224 million / 4 years

Towns and Booker became eligible for the supermax extension worth $224 million in 2022 – and the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns did not hesitate to give them the money they deserve, respectively. Plus, they met the requirements needed to get such a big contract after making the All-NBA team the previous season.

4. Giannis Antetokoumnpo – $228 million / 5 years

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, one-time NBA champion, one-time Finals MVP, one-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and seven-time All-Star. Naturally, he deserves to be paid like a top player should be.

Antetokounmpo signed his supermax extension worth $228 million over five years in 2020 after winning two MVP awards.

3 – Bradley Beal – $251 million / 5 years

In order to get every penny he deserves, Beal opted out of the $36.4 million he had from the two-year, $70.14 million extension he signed in 2019. After that, he quickly signed the veteran’s maximum extension, where players can receive at least 35 percent of the team’s salary cap. As a result, Beal got his five-year, $251 million contract as a free agent with the Washington Wizards.

2 – Nikola Jokic – $270 million / 5 years

Before Jaylen Brown signed his massive extension with the Celtics, Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic was the highest-paid player in the NBA – and deservedly so. When Jokic signed his five-year, $270 million supermax extension with the Nuggets, he was already a two-time MVP and one of the greatest offensive tools in NBA history.

Jokic became eligible for the supermax after his MVP win in 2021, though there was no doubt about that as he followed it up with another MVP campaign.
Joker’s deal officially starts in the 2023-24 season at $47 million, with the money increasing each year until 2027-28, when he is due to earn $62 million.
