How does Trevon Diggs’ contract with Cowboys compare to other CB deals in NFL?

773 days ago

Trevon Diggs snagged one of the most lucrative deals among NFL cornerbacks on Tuesday. Let’s take a look.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the fourth-year cornerback signed a five-year, $97 million contract – a deal that makes him one of the five highest-paid players at his position. The deal will ensure one of the NFL’s best ballhawks remains in Dallas.

Diggs, just 24, already has an All-Pro season and two Pro Bowl seasons in just three years of his NFL career. He has 17 interceptions for the Cowboys, including an NFL-leading 11 in 2021. Though he had eight fewer in 2022, he still earned his second Pro Bowl nod when the Cowboys went 12-5 and fielded the No. 8 pass defense (6.2 yards per attempt) and the No. 8 team in interceptions (16).

That secures one of the Cowboys’ top defensive players as the team tries to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995. Dallas still needs to reach a deal for outstanding EDGE linebacker Micah Parsons, and he’ll likely also try to be one of the five highest-paid at his position.

Highest-paid NFL cornerbacks in 2023

Diggs’ five-year contract not only represents the biggest payday of his career – his first contract was worth $6.32 million over four years – it also makes him one of the five highest-paid cornerbacks. He is just $3.5 million away from the highest total value for a cornerback (Denzel Ward’s $100.5 million), $1.6 million away from the mark for highest AAV (Jaire Alexander’s $21 million) and $2.2 million away from the highest guaranteed value (Ward’s $44.5 million).

According to Over The Cap, Diggs is only behind:

  • 4° – Marlon Humphrey – $97.5 million;
  • 3° – Jalen Ramsey – $100 million;
  • 2° – Denzel Ward – $105 million;
  • 1° – Jaire Alexander – $84 million.
