NFL Weekly Report: Part 1

Training camps have begun, and the preseason starts on Thursday! An abundance of news last week splits the article in two again this week. Lets jump right in….

Saquon Barkley Finally Agrees

Barkley finally agreed to a one-year reworked agreement to get him into camp. With the running back market at the lowest it has ever been, this was needed middle ground agreement for both sides. Barkley gets some extra guaranteed money, and the Giants don’t have to agree to a long-term agreement. This also gives Barkley and both sides more time to agree to a new deal for another season but don’t expect more negotiations until the completion of this season. Contract terms were $10.1 million fully guaranteed with a $2 million upfront signing bonus and some added performance bonuses.

Panthers QB Bryce Young Named Starter

Panthers HC Frank Reich has named #1 Overall Pick Bryce Young his Week 1 starter over veteran QB Andy Dalton. If he does start Week 1 (as expected) he would be the youngest starting quarterback in Panthers’ history since Cam Newton in 2011. This was expected but it seemed they would be giving Young some competition, but a strong minicamp solidified his status as QB1.

49ers QB Brock Purdy Returns To San Francisco

49ers starting QB Brock Purdy appears to be ahead of schedule for his return to the field after injuring his tearing his PCL in last seasons NFC Championship against Philadelphia. 49ers QB room is stacked with returning former starter QB Trey Lance and new signee QB Sam Darnold. Purdy is expected to be the starter (if healthy) and Darnold appears to be the backup with Lance currently the 3rd QB. Expect San Francisco to field trade calls for QB Trey Lance.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert Signs Record Breaking Extension With Chargers

We have talked all off season about the impending extensions of big name QBs that were on the horizon. We saw Ravens QB Lamar Jackson sign a 5-year $260 million extension and Eagles QB Jalen Hurts sign a 5-year $255 million extension. Herbert signs a deal larger than either of them. Herbert agrees to a 5-year $262 million deal that keeps her in Los Angeles through the 2029 season. While his accomplishments are not on par with his Hurts and Jackson, the Herbert extension is necessary for this franchise. Staying in contention with a franchise quarterback is the only way to do business now and Herbert keeps them relevant.

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers New Contract

Aaron Rodgers takes a $35 million dollar pay cut to his new revised contract that will take him through the 2024 season. This new contract will allow the Jets more flexibility with the salary cap to allow them to improve the team. Most humans cannot decipher the NFL Salary Cap and this one is no different. As his roster bonuses come out to near $60 million for 2024. The pay cut comes from his reduction of the guaranteed money that the contract will pay out.
