Clippers forward Amir Coffey was arrested in Los Angeles on Sunday morning after police said they found a loaded gun in his car during a routine traffic stop.
Police told TMZ Sports that officers stopped the car Coffey was in as a passenger around 2:30 a.m. in Hollywood – after they spotted the car speeding. When officers approached the vehicle, they said it smelled of marijuana, so they searched it and found a loaded handgun.
Officers said Coffey admitted the gun was his and was arrested for possession of a firearm. We were told that another person who was at the scene was cited for possession of marijuana.
Records show Coffey was taken to jail around 5:05 a.m., though he was released four hours later on his own recognizance.
He is due in court for a hearing on the matter later next month.
Coffey, 26, has been part of the Clippers’ organization since 2019, having played 181 games for the team over the past four seasons. During his career in L.A., he averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
