After winning the 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, everybody is talking about the new boy and even more so considering how little he’s played in the NBA.
After three seasons of college soccer, it seems McClung has finally had enough and with that, he signed a Summer League contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021. Although he initially caught the eye, so much so that he was offered a two-way contract, he was eventually waived and after that signed a G League contract. It is important to note that he averaged 20 points per game in South Bay, but in the end, he was only called up for one game in the NBA with the Lakers, in December 2021. Then, in April 2022, McClung was signed for one game by the Chicago Bulls, but in the end nothing materialized and with that he went back to being a free agent. More recently, fans saw him with the Golden State Warriors during their pre-season tour in Japan, but again, nothing happened.
Eventually, McClung went to the Philadelphia 76ers – their G League affiliate: Delaware Blue Coats – and it looks like he has found his place. With 5.8 rebounds per game and an increase in rebounding numbers, it seems he has finally fixed the areas of his game that were deemed as “needing improvement”. With that in mind, the buzzer-beater signed a two-way contract that will leave him on the Sixers roster for the rest of the season, but also available to the Blue Coats should they need him. Either way, the only thing that’s guaranteed right now is that Mac McClung has announced himself to NBA fans and chances are he’s just getting started.
