The contract holdout of Chris Jones, the star defensive tackle of the Kansas City Chiefs continues. Recently, their General Manager gave a few details regarding the possible future of the player. Brett Veach, Chiefs GM, has expressed his desire to hold onto Chris Jones.
Chris Jones was drafted by Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The DT played college football at Mississippi State. He went to Houston High School and played for the Hilltoppers, during his college days.
The NFL ranked 39, on the list of “Top 100 Players of 2022”, which then jumped all the way to No.10 in 2023. The four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champion, is holding for a lucrative contract extension. Chiefs GM, Brett Veach has recently shared his thoughts with the Kansas City Star.
“I think for all parties, I think the best resolution would be for him to end his career as a Chief—and get that financial security—and for us to do what we had set out to do, and that’s to work through last offseason with this offseason in mind and get some young guys, which we did that, and then focus on this year and getting Chris done,” he said.
“Hopefully, we get this resolved, but we have no intentions of making a trade.”
In 2022 Jones has 15.5 sacks, resulting in a career total of 65. The experienced player had four passes defended, and 44 tackles. He also took the third spot in the voting of Defensive Player of the Year. Jones’s skill set has led the Kansas City Chiefs to grab Super Bowl twice.
Veach has also shed light on the reasons why Chris Jones wants a high-paying contract, stating, “He’s a great player, and he wants a big contract. He deserves a big contract, and I don’t think there’s any surprises in that regard.
“But there’s just some hurdles we have to work through in regards to how we can keep this thing going for the short- and long-term. But we’ve never wavered on, ‘This is a guy that we want to exhaust all of our efforts to get done,’ because that’s how much we think of him.”
In the NFL regular season kickoff game which will take place on September 7th, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Detroit Lions.
