Mike McCarthy may be used to being the head coach and directing traffic from a lofted position, but the timing is right for the former Packers HC to start calling the shots.
Cowboys head honcho Jerry Jones is a happy man now that McCarthy is the designated playcaller, a position he has not taken up for five years.
McCarthy has led the Cowboys to back-to-back 12-5 seasons and will be looking to continue their evolution, by making much more of an impact in postseason.
“He’s the busiest man in the business,” crowed Jones. “He doesn’t have time to remember your name out there. He is focused and engaged,” the owner admitted preseason.
McCarthy is calling plays for the first time since his Packers days, after the release of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore (now of the Chargers).
Not that he was too shabby at the Packers, becoming only the fifth coach in history to lead a franchise to eight successive playoff spots, for the Green Bay side.
This is McCarthy’s fourth season as HC of the Cowboys, and first time with the added duties of assembling and engaging an attack that finished fourth highest last season in the points scored bracket (467).
The Superbowl XLV winner (2011) will look to add the Midas Touch to an impressive offensive unit, and Jones could not be happier.
