There can be few players happier to see quarterback Justin Herbert extending his contract at the Chargers than wide receiver Mike Williams.
Williams, a former Clemson star and a seventh overall pick in 2017, will feel that the partnership with Herbert is only starting to properly blossom. Alongside fellow WR Keenan Allen the pair will look to the strength of the Herbert arm to make the yards and send the Chargers into the playoffs.
Talking at the Chargers preseason camp, Williams said his success with Herbert “comes from communication and doing it. I know where he is going to put the ball when I am running downfield, and he knows where I like it.”.
With 290 receptions and 4,657 receiving yards, the dynamic duo has proved how effective communication and keeping-it-simple can be in winning football games. Repetition makes the hard yards, and Williams acknowledges Justin Herbert’s skill and influence, not just for himself but with fellow WR Allen.
Mike Williams also speaks highly of new Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, “It’s been awesome. He’s young, knows how to get us the ball and how to moves us all around, getting everyone involved.”
The most impressive aspect of Moore so far, “he does a good job of putting us in certain spots so the defense can’t key on us. That’s the big thing.”
Moore knows a thing or two about quarterback play, having spent six seasons as a player at the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions.
He moved into coaching with a three-year stint at the Cowboys as OC before making the switch to the Chargers.
With Moore and Herbert pulling the strings, look for the Chargers wide receivers to be gamechangers this season.
