Kyle Shanahan did not let emotions get the better of him as he deadpanned reporters questioning his relationship with Jimmy Garoppolo, his former 49ers QB.
“I think I’ve talked about his legacy; I think Jimmy was unbelievable for us, we won lots of games,” he told reporters.
“I get asked is there a scenario where I see him coming back again, and I give a common answer, no,” he added.
Shanahan reminisced about the good times with Garoppolo instead.
“Every time he played and stayed healthy, we were either in the Superbowl or NFC Championship game, so I hope no one insinuates that I said anything differently,” the HC concluded.
Garoppolo, who signed a $67.5 million three-year deal with Las Vegas Raiders, was unceremoniously dumped by Shanahan after starting the 2022 preseason as back-up to Trey Lance.
But Lance was to suffer a serious injury in week 2 against the Seahawks and ‘Jimmy G’ took to the line-calling position. The QB had an indifferent season despite the franchise finishing 13-4.
He suffered an ankle injury in week 13 and rookie Brock Purdy took the reins.
In the playoffs Purdy suffered an injury as did Josh Johnson and the 49ers lost in the Championship game against the Eagles.
