As James Harden and the 76ers continue to discuss Harden’s future, among the chaos his teammate and fellow MVP winner, Joel Embiid has offered insight on his reaction to learning of the star guard’s reported interest in playing somewhere other than Philadelphia.
Speaking to Showtime’s Rachel Nichols, Embiid admitted he was “disappointed” in hearing about his teammate and close friend’s desire to leave Philadelphia but soon understood the move is all about business.
The reigning NBA MVP slightly changed his diplomatic tone as he told Nichols he hopes Harden returns so they can carry out their goal of winning a championship.
However, Embiid also stated he appreciates how Harden has handled the situation before adding the two will remain friends regardless of what happens.
Of course, should Embiid get his wish, his on-court relationship with Harden can serve as a blueprint for the 76ers to follow after the pair’s successful albeit frustrating first season together.
The return the Sixers receive for Harden will dictate how the rest of the Joel Embiid era goes in Philadelphia.
It’s unclear how Embiid feels about Harden’s imminent departure, but he’ll be watching the return.
Well, this trade might be one of the Sixers’ best—and perhaps final—chances to retool their roster around him.
“You can guarantee rival front offices are watching this situation with the hopes that Embiid could be the next All-NBA talent seeking a different destination,” Fischer wrote.
Regardless of how the Sixers settle Harden’s future, Embiid may be willing to give them at least one more season to see how the dust settles. But if they take a step back, they could soon face the same trade demand that the Trailblazers’ have been dealing with Lillard.
Another team to watch in a potential Joel Embiid sweepstakes are the Houston Rockets due to Joel’s close relationship with head coach Ime Udoka.
Moreover, the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets are the two favorites to land the reigning MVP.
