When Trey Lance took the field to face the Denver Broncos, things didn"t go well at first.
Elijah Garcia intercepted Lance"s floated throw attempt above the Broncos" defensive line.
Lance, though, answered with three straight touchdown drives that culminated in a game-winning field goal to give the 49ers their first preseason victory.
With a strike up the seam to rookie tight end Cameron Latu, Lance added his second touchdown throw of the preseason to pull the 49ers to within two points of the Broncos.
The 49ers gained victory over the Denver Broncos at Levi’s Stadium and the score was 21-20. Lance concluded 12 of 18 pass attempts for 173 yards. He also did one touchdown pass and one interception.

Lance said, "I feel like every time I step on the field I learn so much and get so much better from every rep, whether it’s practice, games, whatever, just seeing as many pictures as I can and getting as many reps as I can with these guys,"

Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers had admired Lance’s ability to handle criticism. He said, "Trey is extremely smart, very socially aware. He knows how the world works"
"So, he does his best — which I think he does a damn good job of — [in] trying to block all that out and focus on getting better. I think that’s what he’s done so far."
Shanahan further added, "It goes with it for quarterbacks, it goes with it for anybody who’s a high draft pick, but especially a quarterback,"
"That’s one of the tough things for that position but also high draft picks. I mean, you watch receivers come in the league and they have a few drops early in camp and it becomes a lot of pressure on them".
"People want to see those people take off and do it right away and have no flaws. And that’s just part of it."
