In a bittersweet moment, Spain"s captain Olga Carmona, who scored the winning goal in the Women"s World Cup final, received devastating news of her father"s demise after the game.

Carmona, 23, secured Spain"s victory against England, claiming Spain"s first ever Women"s World Cup.

However, her joy was overshadowed by the news of her father"s loss, who had been battling a long illness and sadly passed away on Friday, as reported by Reuters.

Taking to social media, Carmona expressed her emotions, writing, “I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad." Alongside her heartfelt message, she shared a picture of herself kissing her winners" medal.

Carmona also revealed, “And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique."

Each time a team wins the World Cup, a gold star is added to their shirt above the national team crest.

In a subsequent statement, Carmona further expressed her gratitude, saying, “I have no words to thank [you for] all your love. Yesterday was the best and the worst day of my life."

The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) conveyed their condolences, stating, “The RFEF deeply regrets to announce the death of Olga Carmona"s father. The footballer learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We send our most sincere embrace to Olga and her family in a moment of deep sorrow. We love you, Olga, you are Spanish soccer history."

During the celebration of her goal, Carmona revealed a message on her T-shirt that read “Merchi," which she later explained was a tribute to a friend whose mother had also passed away.

Carmona played a significant role in Spain"s World Cup journey, starting in five out of their seven games.

Spanish media outlet Relevo reported that Carmona"s family and friends made the difficult decision not to inform her of her father"s passing, in order to let her focus on the final.

Carmona"s club, Real Madrid too expressed their condolences and affection, extending their support to Olga, her family, and loved ones during this challenging time.
