In a recent SportsCenter segment, anchor Zubin Mehenti described San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance’s performance as “dismal,” sparking controversy among fans and raising questions about the accuracy of the assessment.

Despite Mehenti’s comments, Lance’s showing in Saturday’s preseason game showcased significant progress and potential for the young quarterback.

Lance entered the 49ers camp amidst competition for the starting job, facing off against last season’s hero Brock Purdy and new arrival Sam Darnold.

The hype surrounding Lance, the former third-overall pick, has drawn criticism, particularly as it became apparent that Purdy was likely to secure the starting position for the upcoming season.

While Lance’s initial performance in Saturday night’s game was not exceptional, he gradually found his rhythm.

In the fourth quarter, with the Broncos leading by eight points, Lance led the Niners on a remarkable drive, completing six of seven passes and connecting with rookie tight end Cameron Latu for a crucial 22-yard touchdown.

With the score at 20-18 in favor of the Broncos, Lance once again demonstrated his talent, delivering a 43-yard catch-and-run to rookie receiver Ronnie Bell, setting up Jake Moody’s game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Lance’s final stat line for the game stood at 12-of-18 for 173 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. However, it is important to note that he made several clutch plays that contributed to San Francisco’s victory.

While this performance represents just one game, it signifies a positive step forward for Lance as he strives to prove himself worthy of another opportunity to compete for the starting job.

During the overnight SportsCenter broadcast, Mehenti highlighted the irony of Purdy, who was dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 2022 NFL Draft, seemingly outperforming Lance and Darnold, both of whom were selected as No. 3 overall picks.

However, Mehenti’s comments failed to accurately reflect the outcome of Saturday night’s game.

As a clip of Lance’s interception played, Mehenti acknowledged the discrepancy between his statement and the reality of the game, attempting to adjust his perspective accordingly.

The visual presentation of the game seemed to emphasize Trey Lance’s struggles, potentially influencing the discussion.

The SportsCenter producers seem to have put Mehenti in a position where the analysis did not accurately reflect what had occurred on the field.

This incident did not sit well with a significant portion of the 49ers fans who have been following the ongoing narrative surrounding the team’s quarterback situation.
