Watch: Chance for a rare Cycle? Gunnar Henderson says “nah” and takes the extra base

Talk about putting the team first. Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson turned down the chance to compete the ‘cycle’, opting to run a double when all he needed was a single.

Leading at 10-1 against the Oakland Athletics the former Auburn star hit the ball far down the right field and with the crowd and the dugout baying for him to run to first base, Henderson rounded for second and missed out on the chance to become the 344th player since 1882 to hit a single, double, triple and home run in one game.

At the top of the eighth all the rookie needed to do was trot down for the single and the ‘cycle’ but whether it was instinct or fierce determination, he opted for the double.

The Orioles went on to win the game 12-1.
