In April 2023, former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade opened up about his decision to leave behind their $22,000,000 Florida residence.
Well, they made this move to provide a safer environment for their 15-year-old transgender daughter, Zaya.
Zaya embraced her identity as a transgender in 2020.
“I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions. I mean, obviously, the taxes are great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there,” said Wade on Showtime’s “Headliners taking aim at Florida’s recent wave of contentious legislation targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
Currently, the “Don’t Say Gay” bill which landed on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk last year, prohibits the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms.
During his NBA career, Wade became synonymous with the city of Miami, proudly donning the Heat jersey from 2003 to 2016 and again from 2018 to 2019.
However, soon after retiring from NBA, Wade had been trying to square off his Miami waterfront home.
Finally, in 2021, the 3× NBA champion sold the mansion for $22 million.
Wade was previously married to his high school girlfriend Siohvaughn Funches from 2002-2007. The 13× NBA All-Star shares two children with his ex-wife and one of them is Zaya.
Next, Dwyane started dating Hollywood starlet Gabrielle Union in 2008. In December 2013, the couple got engaged when the Miami Heat icon popped the question. The following year, Dwyane and Gabrielle got hitched in Miami.
Currently, the Wades live in Los Angeles.
