The Los Angeles Chargers gave their franchise quarterback Justin Herbert a contract extension this offseason that made him the highest-paid player in the NFL. Only 25 years old, this contract is a vote of confidence in their young signal-caller.
Herbert has taken the league by storm in his first three seasons with his impressive on-field efforts and incredible arm talent. His talent has never been in question but now, his teammates are starting to notice the growth in his leadership abilities.
According to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry, veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack said “he’s coming around as a leader.”
Wide receiver Keenan Allen also stated that Herbert looks to be “more comfortable in every setting.” Allen went on to reference how Herbert has been more outspoken and vocal as a leader this offseason. “He gives speeches now,” Allen said.
If you’re a Chargers fan, these are exactly the type of comments you want to hear about Herbert. A young quarterback needs to be able to take command of a huddle, so it is encouraging to see him make strides as a leader.
Additionally, it is important to note the people who are acknowledging his improvements. Mack is a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and All-Pro and Allen is a five-time Pro Bowler. These are two of the most respected and experienced players in the Chargers locker room.
With a bigger contract comes bigger expectations. “I look forward to that challenge…” said Herbert. He has handled the extension well thus far and hopefully that continues.
