Jerry Jones on latest arrest of Cowboys DE: “98 last year to 66, so that’s improvement”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is one of the more outspoken club owners in professional sports. While prominent members of organizations usually try to avoid the spotlight, Jones dives head-first into it.

Jones was asked to give his thoughts on the recent arrest of Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams. Williams was pulled over for speeding when he was caught going 66 miles per hour. While being pulled over for speeding, he was arrested for controlled substance and weapon charges.

According to Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram, Williams had marijuana while unlawfully carrying a weapon. Unfortunately, this isn’t Williams’ first run-in with law enforcement.

Last season, Williams was cited for reckless driving linked to a car crash that forced him to miss a game. He was caught going nearly 100 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone.

The two arrests being so close to one another led to some strange comments being made about Williams by Jones:

Jones stated that Williams is “maturing” because this year when he was caught speeding he was driving 30-plus miles per hour less than he did the year prior when he was charged with reckless driving.

Williams was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of last year’s NFL Draft despite having some off-field character concerns. Being arrested twice in as many seasons may not necessarily be the best way to alleviate some of those concerns.

As with all players who face legal troubles, the NFL will investigate the matter, which could lead to Williams being suspended.
