Rory Mcllroy is set to represent Team Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup, however, he’ll be doing it without some players who left the PGA to play for the LIV Golf League. Mcllroy seems confident in Europe’s chance of victory even without some of the big-named players from LIV.
Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Ian Poulter all decided to join the LIV tour in 2022 and as a result, they are ineligible to participate in the Ryder Cup. However, US LIV players are still eligible to play in the upcoming event in Rome.
“I don’t think it would make a difference for us,” said Mcllroy.
Mcllroy isn’t worried about missing out on some of the best European golfers because of their involvement with LIV Golf because Team Europe already has an excellent list of golfers.
In addition to Mcllroy, Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm have already automatically qualified. Hovland just set the course record in his epic BMW Championship victory over Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Hovland’s mark of nine-under 61 just barely edged out Sam Burns and Max Homa’s record score of 62. Now, Hovland has an opportunity to carry that momentum into the Ryder Cup next month.
The 2023 Ryder Cup is set to take place on Friday, Sept. 29, and go until Sunday, Oct. 1. The tournament is taking place at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
While Mcllroy doesn’t seem too concerned about the lack of LIV Golf members on Team Europe, seeing how the rest of the team shapes up will be interesting.
