The latest doing the NFL rounds is how the Cowboys almost drafted Jalen Hurts of the Eagles, who selected 53rd overall by the Philly team.
Hurts played college for both Alabama and Oklahoma and the former Sooner was a first-team All-SEC pick (2016).
He was picked in the second round of the Draft and was signed as a third string quarterback behind Nate Sudfield and Carson Went. He overtook both to become the starting QB in his first season, and in week 16 against the Cowboys Hurts threw one TD, rushed for 69 yards, and threw 342 yards. The Eagles lost 37-17 but the youngster must have left an impression on co-owner Jones.
It’s true the Cowboys discussed Hurts, even went so far as to have a second-round grade on him, but ultimately picked cornerback Trevon Diggs, two picks ahead of Hurts. They also picked fellow Sooner CeeDee Lamb ahead of the QB.
If Jones really wanted him, they had the chance and they bypassed him, as did the Eagles who took TCU’s WD Jalen Reagor at the 21st overall spot.
Ultimately Jones is playing a bit of one-upmanship. Could of, maybe, close-too, if-only. Another story for another day.
