The Dallas Cowboys recently made headlines when they decided to acquire quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers. It has left many people wondering what this means for Dak Prescott’s future with the team.
Prescott has just two years remaining on his contract and there have been rumors this offseason that the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on an extension. The acquisition of Lance could be seen as an attempt at gaining leverage in negotiations by the Cowboys.
However, Prescott doesn’t seem too concerned at the moment. "I’m going to leave those talks in the office where business is handled," said Prescott. "We’re going to welcome him [Lance] as we do any teammate and hopefully he just makes us better," Prescott continued.
The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for Lance, who was selected with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lance has been unable to establish himself as the team’s starting quarterback since his arrival to the Bay Area. The 49ers traded up with the Miami Dolphins for the right to select Lance with the third overall pick. They sent three first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Dolphins in exchange for Lance.
Since then, Lance has started in just four games for the 49ers and was recently named the third-string quarterback before ultimately being traded to the Cowboys. Now, he steps into a situation in Dallas where he will have an opportunity to compete for the backup quarterback job.
