NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo has reported that the Houston Texans have decided to cut starting linebacker Christian Kirksey ahead of today’s roster cut deadline.
By 4 p.m. ET, all teams need to reduce their rosters from 90 players to 53.
Kirksey spent the last two years with the Texans, serving as a team captain last year. He played all 17 games last season, posting 124 tackles to go along with three sacks and two interceptions.
He missed a bulk of training camp this offseason due to a hamstring injury. The Texans cutting Kirksey saves the team over $5 million.
Drafted in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Kirksey will now look to land with his fourth team in 10 seasons. He spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers before landing with the Texans in 2021.
Kirksey represented the Texans as the team’s candidate for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, arguably the NFL’s most prestige award.
With the NFL season less than two weeks away and rosters being finalized as of 4 p.m. ET today, it remains to be seen when/where Kirksey will sign his next deal.
The Texans are set to travel to Baltimore in Week 1 to face off against the Ravens in their 2023 regular season opener.
