The Yankees have released third baseman Josh Donaldson this week and a clip of GM Brian Cashman comparing him with former Yankees player Gio Urshela has surfaced on X.
Cashman is heard praising Donaldson at the expense of Urshela in a five second clip, which has reached over 1.2 million views in less than 24 hours.
Donaldson is a free agent now, with the 37-year-old on the market and looking for his seventh MLB team in a 13-year career.
Cashman said in the clip that Urshela is ‘no Donaldson’ referring to the high status of the former Oakland Athletics catcher, but he has fallen out of favor, with an average of 0.142 in 2023 with only 10 home runs and 15 RBI’s from 33 games.
He has played for the Athletics, Blue Jays, Indians, Braves, Twins and recently the Yankees.
Urshela has been hitting a .299 in 2023 for the Angels, before an injury, after a role at the Twins and the Yankees, who released the short-stop in 2022.
The Yankees are dead last in the AL east with a 64-68 season.
"We appreciate what Gio has done but he's not Josh Donaldson."
