In July 2022, New York Yankees veteran Derek Jeter finally lifted the veil on his notorious “gift basket” story that fans have long wondered about.
It was in 2011 when rumors first began to swirl about Jeter’s unique post-date gift ritual. Reports of women receiving extravagant gift baskets after spending a night with the iconic shortstop made headlines.
Ahead of the much-anticipated release of his docuseries in 2022, “The Captain,” Jeter offered a fresh perspective on the decade-long rumor that has trailed him.
In an interview with the Daily Beast, the ex-Yankees shortstop opened up about his reaction to the outlandish stories that had taken on a life of their own.
“You know, you see it, and then it’s like, how the f**k did people come up with this?” Jeter quipped. “Basically, that’s it. And who would believe this st? And you believed it!” he added, with a wry smile.
Jeter further recounted an amusing encounter he had experienced at a Starbucks when a fan brought up the “gift-basket” gesture.
“I remember being at a Starbucks one time and there’s some random guy behind me,” Jeter shared.
“He says, ‘Hey, I just want to let you know that I’m giving out gift baskets because you did.’ And I turned around and said, ‘You’re a f**kin’ idiot!’ and the look on his face… like, did he think I was gonna say, ‘Yeah, good job, man!'”
“It’s a story that became larger than life,” Derek Jeter reflected.
“People keep regurgitating this story that never happened. Never happened,” he definitively concluded.
Currently, Derek Jeter is married to former Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue model, Hannah Davis.
Ever since their marriage in 2016, the Jeter family expanded over the years, with the arrival of three daughters in August 2017, January 2019, and December 2021, respectively. Additionally, the couple welcomed a son to their family in May 2023.
