Star running back Jonathan Taylor has requested to be traded from the Indianapolis Colts in response to the two sides failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. While things have escalated since then, Colts general manager Chris Ballard hasn’t given up hope that the relationship can be restored.
Ballard addressed the media this week to discuss the ongoing situation, stating: “It sucks for the Colts. It sucks for the Jonathan Taylor. And it sucks for our fans. It just does. It’s where we’re at and we’ve got to work through it.”
Despite Ballard acknowledging that Taylor’s uncertain status with the team is a concern, Ballard went on to say that “Relationships are repairable.” However, the team has already informed Taylor that they won’t be giving him a contract extension this offseason. So, how else do they plan to repair this relationship?
The Colts gave Taylor permission to seek a trade and find a suitable trade partner that would give the Colts what they were looking for in exchange for Taylor, but they gave him an Aug. 29 deadline to do so. There were offers on the table, but none of which met the Colts’ criteria for an appetizing trade package.
After not coming to terms on a contract extension and/or finding a proper trade partner, where do Taylor and the Colts turn to next?
Taylor has been placed on the Colts’ PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list leading up to the start of the regular season, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the 2023 season.
