Chris Jones contract update: Will the Chiefs crack a deal before the opening game of the season?

Chris Jones, the star defensive tackle with the Chiefs, and the team are still trying to reach an agreement to stop his strike. There is undoubtedly room for negotiation.

The time is moving, and a deal is yet to be finalized. The season will commence in four days in Kansas City.

According to Pro Football Talk, Jones’ $19.5 million salary for this season is being offered to be replaced by a new three-year, $74 million contract from the Chiefs.

As per ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs, general manager, Brett Veach, informs that there is still hope that the star defensive tackle, Jones, could play in the season opener on September 7th, which is against the Detroit Lions.

Veach said, “We’re certainly hopeful of that,”

“We’re looking forward to next Thursday and hopefully he’s in the lineup and he’s ready to go.”

In 2020, the defensive tackle signed a four-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, and out of that, only one season remains.

However, Jones has been absent from all the practices and the preseason. As he wishes to negotiate a mutually satisfying contract.

Veach also mentions that communication between both parties has sped up, but more clarity on the matter is not currently provided by the sources.

He further said, “We’re going to continue to press on,”

“We’re just going to keep working on this thing.”

According to various sources, Veach also made it clear earlier when he said, “He’s a great player, and he wants a big contract. He deserves a big contract, and I don’t think there’s any surprises in that regard,”

“But there’s just some hurdles we have to work through in regards to how we can keep this thing going for the short- and long-term. But we’ve never wavered on, ‘This is a guy that we want to exhaust all of our efforts to get done,’ because that’s how much we think of him.”

A similar situation also happened with the Chiefs regarding Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs’ trade option carries a significant amount of risk since they can’t be sure they’ll locate someone who can perform with the same abilities as Jones does. He is too important for them to exchange.

They wouldn’t receive someone to take his place if they traded him at this time. After the season, it would be an ideal time to acquire another talent if the team sees fit.
