Since the New York Jets traded for four-time MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the expectations for the team have changed drastically. Despite having the longest playoff drought in the four major North American sports leagues (12 seasons), former Jets legend Joe Klecko recently made a bold prediction.
“With our four-time MVP, how could not go to the Super Bowl?” Klecko asked TMZ Sports this in response to being questioned on whether or not the Jets will make the big game this season. Picking a franchise that hasn’t played in a postseason game in over a decade to reach the Super Bowl is quite a statement to make.
Klecko was recently voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2023. He spent 11 of his 12 seasons in the NFL with the Jets before spending his final season with the Indianapolis Colts.
Through 12 seasons as a pro, Klecko was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and earned All-Pro honors twice. He recorded a career-high 20.5 sacks in 1981, which led the league that season. As a result, he earned second place in the 1981 AP Defensive Player of the Year voting, behind New York Giants legend Lawrence Taylor.
With the NFL season set to begin this week, it is only a matter of time before we see if Klecko’s prediction is right or not. The Jets will host their divisional rivals, the Buffalo Bills, to kick off the regular season on Monday, Sept. 11.
