The two-way phenomenon, Shohei Ohtani, has been significantly affected by his ulnar collateral ligament tear, raising concerns about his ability to play in the MLB.
As Ohtani evaluates his medical options, his agent has recently made a public announcement, adding to the anticipation surrounding his upcoming free agency.
Initially, it was expected that Ohtani would undergo a second Tommy John procedure for his arm injury, but his agent, Nez Balelo, clarified the situation. This is the first time since August 23rd that the media has received any updates on how the “procedure” will be handled.
Undoubtedly, Ohtani’s injury has had a detrimental impact on his chances of securing a lucrative $500 million contract during free agency, making it crucial for him to make a career-altering decision.
During a press conference at Angel Stadium, agent Nez Balelo shed light on the MVP contender’s plan.
Balelo announced, “There’s not a question in his mind that he’s going to come back and he’s going to continue to do both”.
The most significant question regarding Ohtani’s career was the treatment of his UCL injury.
Balelo stated that Ohtani would undergo “some type of procedure,” including the option of Tommy John surgery, which would require him to sit out the entire 2024 season.
While Balelo addressed several points, two key pieces of information brought solace to the fans:
Ohtani’s commitment to the 2023 season, regardless of his tenure, and his intention to continue as a two-way player in the long run.
With optimism, Balelo ensured that Ohtani would be fine and ready to serve as the designated hitter when the time came, without rushing his recovery.
“Shohei’s going to be fine.. DHing when the bell rings. We know that. We’re not going to push that. He’s going to be good to go”.
Ohtani had previously suffered an elbow injury during his rookie campaign in 2018 but continued to contribute as a hitter for the remainder of the season.
In 2019, Ohtani served as the Angels’ designated hitter while recovering from his injuries.
However, his injuries disrupted the team’s lineup, as seen in the game following Nez’s first public comments.
