Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has delivered an update on wide receiver Cooper Kupp ahead of the team’s Week 1 fixture against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to McVay, the player is still day to day with his hamstring injury and is visiting specialists in Minnesota to get some clarity on the issue.
McVay hopes to have more information by this Wednesday regarding the WR’s status for the game against Seattle on Sunday after Kupp hurt his hamstring in training camp and then suffered a setback during recovery.
“You want to be able to just take it a day at a time,” McVay said on Monday.
“We’re hopeful this will give some clarity once he goes and talks to these doctors. It doesn’t align with some things that have ended up occurring relative to the standard strains of the hamstring just based on what’s occurred over the last month and a half.”
“I think you just move forward, and you have to be able to operate with the situation and the guys we do have, and if he’s able, then that’s outstanding for us, and if not, then that’s kind of how we’ve been operating,” McVay said.
“I think the most important thing is that whenever he’s ready to take the field, whether that be this week, whether that be Week 2, whatever it is, as long as he’s able to have that return to performance and feeling like the Cooper Kupp that we all know and love and he’s got some clarity on, all right, what is going on. I think that will be a good situation for us.”
The All-Pro wide receiver suffered the first injury on Aug. 1.
He got ruled day-to-day then but returned to practice before suffering his subsequent setback.
Kupp’s status for Week 1 at the Seattle Seahawks remains in the air.
Kupp, the Super Bowl LVI MVP, was limited to nine games in 2022 due to a high-ankle sprain and underwent surgery that cut his season short.
He still amassed 812 yards on 75 catches and had six touchdowns.
It’s been troubling for Kupp, who needed surgery after an ankle injury last year. The player then missed spring OTAs to spend time with his wife as they welcomed a new baby.
He was able to begin training camp but felt a “tug” in his hamstring during an individual red zone drill and got sidelined.
Kupp missed the final eight games of last season with an ankle injury, finishing with 75 catches for 812 yards.
He won the triple crown of receiving in 2021, leading the NFL in catches, yards receiving, and receiving TDs before he caught the winning touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.
Kupp missed the second half of the regular season in 2018 with a knee injury that prevented him from playing in the Rams’ first trip to the Super Bowl under McVay.
The Rams’ healthy receivers include Van Jefferson, newcomer Demarcus Robinson, Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek, and rookie Puka Nacua.
