“F***ing stop kissing all the babies” Sean Payton’s advice to Russell Wilson ahead of new NFL 2023 season

Future Hall of Fame head coach Sean Payton didn’t leave his position as a studio analyst for Fox Sports to build his brand, he did it to win football games. The Denver Broncos hired Payton so that he can help restore quarterback Russell Wilson’s value after the worst season of his career, and he’s taken that assignment personally.

Wilson has become one of the most popular players in the NFL throughout his career. His style of play combined with his successful track record and off-field personality have made him an icon in the league. However, Payton told Wilson that if he wants to salvage his career he needs to stop worrying about “Russell Inc.,” per ESPN.

“Will you f—ing stop kissing all the babies?” said Payton. “You’re not running for public office.”

That is quite a message to send to your franchise quarterback. Payton wants to see Wilson more engaged with the team and less fixated on his off-field image and likeness. While the way Payton delivered the idea may have been harsh, the message was clear and necessary for Wilson to hear.

The Broncos sent quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth-round pick to the Seahawks in exchange for Wilson. Following the trade, Wilson and the Broncos agreed to a five-year, $245 million contract, which has him tied to the Broncos through the 2028 season.

Wilson had the lowest completion percentage of his career (60.5) and threw under 20 touchdown passes for the first time in his 11-year NFL career (16). Turning 35 in November, another rough season could put his reputation as a starting NFL quarterback in jeopardy if Payton doesn’t help right the ship sooner than later.
