The Dallas Cowboys made a surprising trade acquisition on August 25th, securing the services of Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, from the San Francisco 49ers.

This unexpected move caught many people off guard, as team owner and general manager Jerry Jones kept the specifics of the deal under wraps until it was finalized.

“No, we, we didn"t tell anybody until we did it, period," Jones said prior to the Cowboys" preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“There was nobody that knew [about] it. We told Mike [McCarthy], after we had done it, but my point is we just wanted to get it done.

Again, we didn"t waste any time. My point is, we didn"t, we didn"t want them, we didn"t want them to hang up."

Jerry Jones has always been known for his firm grip on the Dallas Cowboys" operations, and this trade was no exception.

Jones revealed that he had the authority to formulate and approve trades without the need for anyone else"s approval.

As both the team owner and general manager, he has the final say in all football-related decisions.

“I didn"t have to send it around," Jones said on 105.3FM The Fan in Dallas, via The Athletic. “I can make that trade in 5 minutes."

Head coach Mike McCarthy was not informed about the specifics of the Trey Lance trade until it was already finalized.

However, once the deal was completed, McCarthy expressed his approval, stating that he had liked Lance as a quarterback during the draft evaluation process.

“I was involved in the evaluation, but the actual business component of it, I am not involved," McCarthy said, via The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Those decisions come down to Jerry and Stephen."

The lack of communication in trades involving quarterbacks can lead to strained relationships and a sense of betrayal. This was evident in the case of Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

However, Jerry Jones has a different stance on this matter. He believes that it is unnecessary to involve other players when discussing potential front-office transactions, as it may overshadow the team"s objectives.

“We very seldom ever talk to anybody but not a player about another player who we"re thinking about drafting or who we"re thinking about getting [in free agency," Jones said. “We don"t do that."

Dak Prescott, the Cowboys" incumbent starting quarterback, was not informed about the trade for Trey Lance.

However, Jones has made it clear that this move does not affect his long-term plans with Prescott.

Jones expressed his desire to have Prescott as the Cowboys" quarterback for the next decade, reaffirming his commitment to their star player.
