Washington Redskins again? New Commanders owners hint at possible return to name

A day after assuming control of the Washington Commanders, Josh Harris expressed his excitement about taking over the NFL team that he and co-owner Mitch Rales supported as children.

“I grew up with Sonny Jurgensen, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Joe Gibbs, the Hogs, Darrell Green, John Riggins, and the rest of these legends and three Super Bowl championships,” Harris said. “The then-Redskins were the team that everyone wanted to be a part of.”

Rales even mentioned considering a move to the area and giving up their support for the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of the team, back then known as the “Redskins”.

However, as of 2020, the team no longer carries that name. Dan Snyder, the owner at the time, faced pressure from sponsors during the national reckoning on racism following the death of George Floyd, ultimately leading to the abandonment of the controversial name after two years of refusal.

Now, with the new ownership group, which includes Magic Johnson, making references to the former name, the debate over the current and future name of the esteemed franchise has been reignited.
