The Seattle Seahawks have restructured the contract of Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams. Per Spotrac.com, the team converted nearly $10 million of Adams’ base salary in 2023 into a signing bonus. The move created over $6 million in additional cap space for the Seahawks to work with this year.
Adams requested to be traded from the New York Jets following contract negotiations that left the star safety without a long-term to remain in New York. He wanted to be atop the NFL’s highest-paid safeties after three consecutive All-Pro campaigns.
Shortly after, the Seahawks sent safety Bradley McDougald, two first-round picks, and a third-round pick in exchange for Adams and a fourth-round pick. Nearly a year after the trade, the Seahawks gave Adams a four-year, $70 million contract extension. His $17.5 million annual salary now ranks third amongst safeties in the NFL.
The Jets have made great use of the assets they received in exchange for Adams. They turned the two first-round picks they received for Adams into last year’s AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and promising offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
On the other hand, things haven’t gone as planned for Adams and the Seahawks during his time with the team. Adams has missed as many games (25) as he’s played for the Seahawks in his three seasons in Seattle, which is a major cause for concern.
It is tough to justify paying a player so much money when they are unable to be on the field consistently.
