When the New York Yankees signed Carlos Rodon in December of 2022, they expected him to be a major addition to a rotation of starting pitchers that left much to be desired last season. However, it has been a rocky debut season for Rodon with the Yankees, including his most recent start against the Detroit Tigers.
“I just got my a** whooped,” said Rodon.
He’s not wrong. In just over three innings, he surrendered eight hits and seven earned runs to the Tigers. It was a brutal start for Rodon, who has only been able to make 10 starts thus far in 2023 due to injuries. Rodon started 55 combined games in his previous two seasons.
In 10 starts as a member of the Yankees, Rodon has a 2-5 record with a 6.60 earned run average in 46.1 innings pitched. In the previous two seasons, he recorded an earned run average of 2.88 or lower while winning no less than 13 games and striking out 185 batters or more.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, Rodon has only been a part of the problem this season. The franchise is currently in the midst of one of its worst seasons in recent memory. Currently having a 70-70 record, the Yankees have not had a losing season since 1992, when the team finished 76-86.
With the Yankees far out of the MLB playoff picture and only 22 games remaining for the team, Rodon will have plenty to think about this offseason as he prepares for the 2024 campaign barring a miraculous late-season turnaround.
