The Bengals offense only managed 142 yards against a resolute Browns defence in their opening week 1 loss to the Cleveland side.
The Cincinnati team have an abysmal record against the Browns going 0-3 in Cleveland since 2017, and 1-5 to them in six years.
Chase and star quarterback Joe Burrow struggled to get going in their 24-3 loss but will take heart in the fact that they started last season 0-2 before going on to clinch the AFC North Championship.
“It’s just frustrating because I called they ass elves and we just lost to some elves,” Chase said after the game.
He was referring to the Browns mascot, Brownie the Elf, and made disparaging remarks in the week leading up to the game.
Whatever Chase said must have galvanized the Browns, or the Cleveland team may just have the psychological edge every time the pair meet.
“We got missed opportunities, we didn’t capitalize … and we lost,” he added.
Burrow took a more sobering approach, “Nobody’s panicking in here, guys … week 1 doesn’t define anybody’s season. Obviously not very good out there, but anybody that watched saw that,” he said.
Burrow threw for a career low 82 yards, and together with Chase were dwarfed by the home team.
The Bengals host the Ravens in week 2 and will need to be better on offense, especially against a Baltimore side fresh off a convincing 25-9 win over the Texans.
The Browns will be excited for their away trip to the Steelers next Tuesday.
