We must remember that the athletes we see on the field/court are humans too. While some athletes have a fiery spirit, it does not that’s how they act when they aren’t playing. The competitive nature of sports can often make us forget that and we must do our best to keep that in mind. Buffalo Bills star wide receiver Stefon Diggs is the latest example of this.
After the Bills’ Week 1 loss to the New York Jets, the media was waiting in the press room to see which player(s) would field questions regarding the loss and Diggs’ name came up. The hot mic picked up audio of Bills reporter Maddy Glab criticizing the receiver and his attitude toward the media.
Diggs is a fierce competitor and at times his aggressive spirit has gotten the best of him in the public eye, which has led to some questions about his character and outspoken personality. So, once he caught wind of the comments, Diggs took to social media to address the matter.
"We get you all have a job. And I respect it, but please remember I’m a human just like you. And if ever made you or anyone else feel like you can’t approach me. I apologize," said Diggs in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Diggs went on to say: "The media or fans may confuse my competitiveness that they witness on the field as who I am as a person. But off the field, I’d never treat anyone how she [Glab] described and have never said anything remotely close to that to her."
While Diggs wants to reassure people that he is not the villain the media has portrayed him to be, the Bills need to turn things around quickly after a disappointing loss to start the season. The Bills host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. ET.
