Phil Collins’ 1981 hit song “In the Air Tonight” has become synonymous with the sports scene, captivating fans and athletes alike for decades.
On Monday, ESPN announced an exciting update to the iconic song, featuring a “reimagining” performed by country star Chris Stapleton, rapper Snoop Dogg, and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana.
This revamped version will make its debut during ESPN’s Monday Night Football doubleheader, creating a fresh and captivating atmosphere for viewers.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter took to Twitter to reveal a 30-second snippet of the reimagined version of “In the Air Tonight.
The song will serve as the opening anthem for the broadcasts of two games on Monday Night Football. First, it will lead into the matchup between the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints on ESPN at 7:15 p.m. ET. Following that, it will pave the way for the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns on ABC at 8:15 p.m. ET.
This refreshed rendition of “In the Air Tonight” will continue to be played before every Monday Night Football broadcast throughout the entire season.
Additionally, it will also feature during ESPN’s Week 18 Saturday Doubleheader, the Super Wild Card, and the first Divisional playoff game.
Interestingly enough, ESPN previously showcased the enduring popularity of “In the Air Tonight” on an episode of Sunday Countdown in 2021.
The segment, presented by Tom Rinaldi, featured both former and current NFL players expressing their deep admiration for the song and its role as a pregame anthem.
While the reimagined version of “In the Air Tonight” promises to bring a fresh perspective to Monday Night Football, it is important to note that the iconic theme song of the show, “Heavy Action,” will remain intact.
The unforgettable instrumental will continue to follow the new rendition, leading into the game called by Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, and Lisa Salters. Moreover, “Heavy Action” will make appearances at various other moments throughout the broadcast, preserving the cherished traditions associated with Monday Night Football.
