Whenever Washington Capitals star left wing Alex Ovechkin decides to retire, there is no denying he will go down as one of the greatest NHL players of all time. The 12-time All-Star is one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history and led the Capitals to their franchise’s first and only Stanley Cup Championship in 2017-18.
Being that he is one of the highest-profile athletes in the sport, his services are in demand. When Ovechkin speaks, people tend to listen. With that said, Ovechkin recently appeared on a podcast to discuss the upcoming NHL season as he prepares for what will be the nineteenth campaign in his illustrious career and he made some eye-opening comments.
During the podcast, Ovechkin was asked to give his thoughts on the NHL’s decision to no longer celebrate special interest groups such as the LGBTQ+ community, troops, and/or law enforcement and he didn’t hold back.
“I’m glad the NHL stopped giving into political pressure. The world needs more of this. What else can I say? Well done. It should be like that everywhere,” said Ovechkin in response to the question.
Normally, players of Ovechkin’s stature do their best to avoid answering questions like this so that it doesn’t get taken out of context and used against them. However, it seems as though Ovechkin is comfortable sharing his opinion and being transparent with his fans even if his comments may be directed towards people who support him as a player.
Whatever the case may be, it will be interesting to see how fans and the rest of the NHL react to Ovechkin’s comments.
