Renowned golfer Phil Mickelson recently opened up about his struggles with addiction and his decision to steer clear of NFL betting this season. Just a few weeks after a book by Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters shed light on Mickelson’s extensive gambling history, the golfer shared some heartfelt insights into the consequences of his betting addiction.

Back on August 23, the public got access to a book that spilled the beans on Mickelson’s gambling habits, which reportedly led to him losing nearly $100 million. The book also revealed a five-year partnership between Walters and Mickelson.

One of the book’s more controversial claims suggested that Mickelson attempted to place a bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup, a prestigious golf tournament. But Mickelson firmly denied these allegations, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport.

However, in his recent statement, Mickelson shifted the conversation away from golf and offered some advice to those considering NFL betting this season. He encouraged people to enjoy the football season in moderation, highlighting the fun of fantasy leagues and friendly banter among pals.

Mickelson admitted that he won’t be placing any bets this year because he recognized that he had gone from harmless fun to addiction, which was anything but enjoyable. While money wasn’t the root of the problem, he regretted how his addiction had distracted him. It had strained his relationships with his family and caused damage that was tough to repair.

The six-time major champion also shared an important message, advising people not to follow his footsteps and cautioning against thinking that those who encourage bad habits are true friends. Mickelson revealed that he had been seeking professional help for years, was currently in recovery, and working on healing the relationships affected by his gambling struggles.

Mickelson encouraged everyone to have a good time in a balanced way throughout the football season and in life in general. He stressed that the cherished moments spent with loved ones and friends were far more valuable than any prizes or fantasy league wins.
