The Chicago Bears were widely expected to make strides after a challenging three-win season in 2022, particularly in improving their offensive performance. However, the team finds itself at 0-2 two games into the 2023 season, grappling with offensive struggles once again.

Justin Fields, the quarterback who led the NFL’s weakest passing offense in the previous season, hasn’t displayed significant improvement in his third year with the Bears. His underwhelming performance has started to frustrate Chicago fans. Stephen A. Smith, however, believes that the responsibility should fall on the Bears’ organization rather than solely on Fields.
“I can’t look at Justin Fields with that talent and say that’s him,” Smith expressed on First Take. “If this brother was in another organization, he wouldn’t look like this.”
Fields has completed slightly over 60% of his passes in the initial two games, tallying three interceptions against two touchdowns. His passer rating stands at 70.7, ranking him 26th among the 32 starting quarterbacks.

While acknowledging Fields’ struggles, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith contends that not all the blame should rest on the 24-year-old’s shoulders. “I see somebody that’s not being developed. I see somebody that’s not growing,” Smith commented on ESPN. “And more importantly, I see apathy kicking in, if not despondency. He knows what kind of situation he’s in. He doesn’t want to be there, and I don’t blame him one bit. That’s how I feel. I don’t know that. I haven’t heard that, but I am surmising he does not want to be there.”
