New England Patriots offensive coordinator is not satisfied with how the offense has looked through the first two weeks of the 2023 NFL season. After the Patriots loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football, O’Brien said the offense has been “inconsistent.”
“I think we moved the ball at times, I’m not saying we moved the ball all the time, but we moved the ball at times,” O’Brien told the Boston Herald. “But we’re inconsistent,” he added. O’Brien went on to take responsibility for the erratic offensive performance through two weeks, saying “We have to coach it better and try to get to be more consistent and finish drives.”
The Patriots put up 17 points in their Week 2 home loss to their divisional rival Dolphins. However, they didn’t score a touchdown until the fourth quarter when they were already down 14 points.
Digging themselves into early holes has been the theme for the Patriots thus far through their first two games. They quickly fell behind 16-0 to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 before losing 25-20 and were down 10-0 against the Dolphins before kicker Chad Ryland kicked a 49-yard field goal to give the Patriots their first points of the night.
Now facing an 0-2 record for the first time since 2001, the Patriots must avoid getting off to a slow start in Week 3 when they travel to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets if they want to avoid being 0-3. The last time the Patriots started a season with an 0-3 record was in 2000.
