Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has officially announced his retirement from the NFL at 32 years old. After nine years in the NFL, the former Super Bowl Champion decided it was time to hang up the cleats.

Duvernay-Tardif was selected in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft after spending his collegiate days playing for McGill University in Canada. However, Duvernay-Tardif was not your average offensive lineman. During his time as a college football player, he was also a medical school student. He graduated from McGill in 2018 with a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Surgery.

In 2019, Duvernay-Tardif started 14 games for the Kansas City Chiefs and played a pivotal role in the team’s run to the Super Bowl in 2019. He was a leader on the offensive line during the 2019 campaign.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Duvernay-Tardif elected to opt out of the 2020 season as a precautionary measure due to the virus. He wanted to help overcome the pandemic and decided to return to Canada to work at a long-term care facility in Quebec.

After some time away from the NFL, Duvernay-Tardif was traded to the New York Jets. He started eight of the 13 games he was able to play for the Jets and now ultimately deciding to announce his retirement.

“I’ve had the chance to play in the NFL for nine years and even today, I sometimes can’t believe I was able to experience this adventure,” Duvernay-Tardif wrote in a heartfelt message on social media.

While he will be remembered for his contributions on the field, we are excited to see the contributions he continues to make off the field as a Doctor of Medicine.
