During Sunday’s game against the Packers, Saints quarterback Derek Carr sustained a sprained AC joint, as revealed by Saints head coach Dennis Allen in his Monday press conference.

The team’s starting quarterback, Carr, suffered the injury in the Saints’ recent loss to the Green Bay Packers. Initial reports indicated a significant absence from play, but Coach Dennis Allen clarified Carr’s status in Monday’s press briefing. Carr will not be definitively ruled out for the Saints’ Week 4 matchup against the Buccaneers; instead, he will be evaluated on a “week-to-week” basis.

Allen stated, “We’ll assess his condition throughout this week. It appears we’ve avoided any major complications. At this point, we’re adopting a week-to-week approach. He’s actually feeling better today than he did yesterday.”

He continued, “So, we’re not making any immediate decisions. We’re not eliminating any possibilities. We’ll gauge his progress as the week unfolds.”

In the upcoming Week 4 game against the Buccaneers and the subsequent matchup with the Patriots in Week 5, Carr’s return will depend on his pain tolerance and ability to function effectively on the field.

Should Carr be unable to play, the former Buccaneers quarterback, Jameis Winston, would step in as his replacement. Winston previously served as the QB for Tampa Bay before the arrival of Tom Brady. Although he hasn’t faced the Buccaneers frequently, Winston has accumulated 304 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in the three games he played against them.

Coach Allen emphasized Carr’s improving condition, saying, “All I can tell you is he was much better today than he was yesterday. We’ll continue to monitor his progress, and when he’s sufficiently healthy to perform and contribute to our team’s chances of winning, he’ll be back on the field. The timeline for recovery varies among individuals. Some players have returned within a week with this injury, while others have needed a couple of weeks. We’ll have to wait and see.”
