Jake Matthews’ contract has been revised, according to Field Yates of ESPN. For the remainder of this season, the action frees up around $7.1 million in cap space.
The organization and Matthews agreed to a three-year contract extension last year.
At the time, he had two years left on his contract; therefore, he is currently committed through the 2026 campaign. He will receive a base salary totaling $15.5 million over the next three years.
The Falcons will have more alternatives than they did before to renegotiating Matthews’ contract, though it’s unclear whether they have a specific use in mind for the additional salary space.
According to YardBarker, Matthews has started three games at left tackle for the Falcons in 2023. Out of 67 eligible players, he is ranked as the No. 16 tackle by Pro Football Focus.
