The Athletics are one of the most storied franchises in MLB history. The franchise has existed for 123 seasons, dating back to 1901. In that time, they have won nine World Series Championships, which is tied for the third-most all-time with the Boston Red Sox. However, the franchise made history for the wrong reason after their most recent loss to the Minnesota Twins.
The A’s were defeated 11-3 by the Twins yesterday, marking their 109th loss of the season. Per ESPN Stats & Info, the loss to the Twins set a record for the most losses in a season since the franchise moved to Oakland in 1968. With only five games remaining this season, the A’s won’t have a chance to tie/set the franchise record for most losses in a season (117), set by the team when they were in Philadelphia in 1916.
Nothing has gone right for the A’s this season. They have the second-highest earned run average as a team (5.53), trailing only the Colorado Rockies. Additionally, they rank last in the MLB in terms of runs scored per game (3.62). The combination of poor pitching and inability to drive in runs has put the A’s in tough spots all season.
The A’s time in the Bay Area could be coming to an end. The team’s ownership has stated its desire to move to Las Vegas by the end of the 2024 season. If that is the case, this is quite a sour note to end on for fans who have supported the franchise since they moved to Oakland in 1968.
