“At the end of the day we all believe in Karma” – Tyreek Hill explains decision to not kick field goal for all-time record, cites superstition as main cause

Have you ever witnessed a home team being booed by their own fans despite scoring a whopping 70 points in a dominating victory?

This unusual scenario unfolded during the Miami Dolphins’ astonishing 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. Surprisingly, Coach Mike McDaniel decided not to pursue a final push for the NFL record for most points in a single game, which they could have achieved by sending kicker Jason Sanders to attempt a 45-yard field goal, a record that had stood for 57 years.

Instead, McDaniel opted for a conservative approach, instructing backup quarterback Mike White to take a knee, avoiding the pursuit of records or additional points. This decision triggered a chorus of boos from the crowd, which quickly faded as the game clock ticked to its conclusion.

Star Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill had a standout performance with 157 yards on nine receptions, along with a touchdown reception from Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa also threw a touchdown to Mostert and had two shovel passes to Achane for scores.

In response to the fan backlash, Coach McDaniel defended his decision, stating,

“I will be fine getting second-guessed by turning down NFL records. That’s fine. I am very, very okay with the decision… That’s called karma, and I’m trying to keep good karma with the Miami Dolphins.”

In a subsequent episode of the ‘It needed to be said’, Tyreek Hill discussed the situation with his co-host, Julius Collins. Tyreek asked Julius:

“If you were the Miami Dolphins head coach, would you have kicked that field goal?”

Julius responded with:

“I gotta take his mentality too.”

Tyreek continued:

“Nah, whatever your mentality is going into that moment, like after we get down there, are you kicking the field goal, because the fans believe it or not, started booing us.”

Julius expressed his perspective, saying:

“It’s a spectator sport, bro. I’m kicking the field goal. Records are in place to be broken.” He also emphasized the opportunity to set new records and the importance of carrying that mentality into the next game.

Julius then asked Tyreek:

“Would you have gone for it, that’s the question!”

Tyreek contemplated the situation, saying:

“It’s one of those situations, man. Football can be a very tricky thing. We told coach, ‘Aye man, let’s just kneel the ball and get out of here,’ because at the end of the day, we all believe in Karma. You want nothing crazy like that happening to us down the road.”
