“But now it’s okay because it benefits the offense?” Former NFL CB Richard Sherman Raises Fair Point About ‘Tush Push’ Play

The Philadelphia Eagles elite offensive line and quarterback Jalen Hurts have patented the ‘tush push’ play when they get near the goal line.

The play has become synonymous with the Eagles being at or near their opponents’ one-yard line and has been nearly automatic every time they run it. With teams being unable to stop, people are getting very annoyed and calling for the NFL to ban that play from being used. However former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman raised a fair point on why there is a case to get rid of the play entirely.

“My problem with the tush push is the NFL literally banned defensive players from pushing other players into the offensive formation on FG and PATs because it was a “Health and safety issue,” but now it’s okay because it benefits the offense?” Sherman shared his thoughts on X (formerly known as Twitter) and it is tough to fault him for feeling this way.

There are so many rules in place to protect offensive players and the quarterback, but the tush push can be a dangerous play for defensive linemen. Offensive linemen have to get as low as possible and dive at the opposing player’s feet for the play to be successful, it’s all about leverage.

However, the Eagles aren’t the only team to have tried to use this play. In Week 1, the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chicago Bears all failed in their attempts to run the tush push play.
