Ronald Acuna Jr. made history against the Chicago Cubs by becoming the first player in MLB history to record 40-plus home runs and 70 or more stolen bases in the same season. A truly remarkable feat, Acuna has displayed his unique blend of power hitting and speed to become arguably the most dangerous player in the MLB, but the Chicago Cubs broadcaster didn’t seem too impressed.
When Acuna stole second base in the bottom of the 10th inning to set the record, he was given a moment to share his achievement with the crowd. There was a loud ovation and even a highlight montage, causing a stoppage in play. In response to the stop in play, Cubs broadcaster Jon Sciambi asked: “Are we really stopping the game to do a highlight montage?”
When a player achieves something that has never been done in the extensive history of the MLB, the answer is yes. Acuna deserved to be honored for his achievement and he gave Braves fans a night they will never forget by taking the time to celebrate with them.
Acuna seems well on his way to earning National League MVP honors. In addition to his 41 home runs and 70 stolen bases, he has a .336 batting average and has been the driving force of a Braves team that has the best record in the MLB. He and the Braves will look to finish the season strong and carry this momentum into the MLB playoffs, starting on Oct. 3, 2023.
