“It was the worst experience I’ve had in my professional lifetime”. Urban Meyer wants nothing to do with coaching

Former football coach Urban Meyer is again denying a return to the touchlines as rumors continue to swirl.

The controversial football coach and pundit has spent most of his years as a coach in college football, with one unsuccessful stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2021 season.

He led the team in 13 games, the fourth lowest tenure in NFL history as the team went 2-11 with him at the helm.

The rumor mill had him being approached by Michigan State, an idea he quashed quickly.

The former HC has been in more hot water than a lobster in his career, with allegations, investigations and insulation part and parcel of his trade.

The former Florida Gators coach left the team in disarray after a five year stretch ending in 37–24 win in the 2011 Outback Bowl.

He left the team in the wake of a three-month investigation by the Sporting News titled “How Urban Meyer broke Florida football".

He moved to Ohio State, and it did not go much better in his five-year tenure on the PR side. On the pitch he led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record and a number 3 rating nationally.

His next two seasons saw him go 12-2 and 12-1 but he was sacked after reports of knowledge of spousal abuse by one of his coaches. He was dumped by Ohio.

He resurfaced again as head coach of the Jaguars in the NFL in 2021 but his run there was just as fraught.

Meyer spoke publicly for the first time on a podcast, in January last year about his NFL experience, “It was the worst experience I"ve had in my professional lifetime".

Meyer said he experienced “depression", and continued, “I"d stare at the ceilings and [think] ‘are we doing everything possible" because I really believed we had a roster that was good enough to win games. I just don"t think we did a great job."

Whether he makes a return or not may jeopardize his ESPN broadcast career so he will be as cautious as a duck on land.
