“It’s like an Avengers team that’s gonna go to Paris. You want to be a part of that” – Ramona Shelburne explains Joel Embiid’s decision to spurn birthplace, join USA’s superteam in 2024

Joel Embiid has come to arguably biggest decision of basketball life; choosing to be part of team USA.

Embiid had a choice of playing for his country of birth Cameroon, France or the US.

The 76ers star players will now be eligible to represent Team USA at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

“This was a really hard decision for Joel as he was born in Cameroon, has ties there … and I think if Cameroon were qualified to play in the Olympics he would be playing for Cameroon," ESPN senior writer Ramona Shelburne said.

“But they"re not … and you see names like LeBron James, Steph Curry, former MVPs in this league and the reigning MVP says we have to get back [at them] together."

“It"s like an Avengers team that"s gonna go to Paris. You want to be a part of that," she added.

Coming fourth in at the recently concluded FIBA World Cup hurt the NBA players and that need for redemption could have been one of the reasons Embiid chose America over France, who finished 18th at the FIBA World Cup, despite being Olympic silver medallists.

The seven-footer was selected as the third overall draft pick for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014.

The 76ers centre was named as the NBA Most Valuable Player last season.

The sixth time NBA All Star, is also a five time All NBA Team selection.

And now he would love to be a Team USA selection, and an Olympic gold medallist.
